　　A Special Direction Phrase in Pre-Qin Chinese: Mid+Noun

　　Abstract: There is a special direction phrase in Pre-Qin Chinese: mid+ noun. Previous research resulting mainly from the perspective of rhyme and typology of this phenomenon is given to explain the syntax, but the explanation has limitations. During the Pre-Qin Dynasty “mid” has no real sense orientation, and the appearance of the word is not grammatically required, which results in the lack of constraints on the syntax and semantics and the flexibility of its order in a sentence when forming a direction phrase with a noun. It can appear before the noun or after it. Direction phrase “mid + noun” still appears in Middle Chinese and Modern Chinese as well as contemporary Chinese.
